Elements!

Elements draws a parallel between the beginnings of life, with an athlete preparing for the race. At the heart of this concept is the arrival, like an athlete, at their peak and ready to run.  The project is based on a 20 minute song cycle, The Elements Cantata, written by Russell Hepplewhite and Jamila Gavin, to help children gain a comprehensive understanding of their own unique journey and the importance of the connection between nature and personal growth and how this can be expressed and enhanced through music and the arts.

“Children are extraordinary – especially their questions. All the How and Why questions. The Beinnings of things.  All cultures and religions have Creation stories, and their stories show how Creation is perceived as coming out of the Elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water, as does science in a different way. Children will feel even more extraordinary when they realise that they all really do come from stars.“

Jamila Gavin, Lyricist

The project is for children in years 4-6 . Up to 250 children from 3-7 schools and children’s organisations take part in the project, each receiving up to 10 x 1-hour weekly workshops.  During each workshop, we teach the children the songs as they form their own choir as well as take part in fun activities.

At the end of the project, the children all come together for a celebratory performance of The Elements Cantata with professional band.  The performance is an opportunity for children to share the joy of music and the community it creates.

The Starting Line Bath Abbey, 27/28 June

Children from local primary schools in Bath will be performing the world premiere of our new work The Elements Cantata, written by Russell Hepplewhite and Jamila Gavin. Rounding off a year of activity for our musical relay to send a message of goodwill to Team GB for Paris 2024 Olympics, the evening will also feature songs from the Extraordinary! song cycle including Fernando, our year anthem Let’s Go and Extraordinary. Performed by 250 local primary school children, the Voices for Life Children’s Choir, BBC Young Chorister of the Year 2023 Winner Belinda Gifford-Guy and directed by Katrine Reimers.
